Frequently Asked Questions

Car Engine Oils

What is the correct way of changing engine oil in my car?

Drain the engine oil when the engine is still warm. You should change the engine oil at intervals recommended in your vehicle manual. Remove the oil filler cap. Place a drain pan under the drain plug. Using the correct spanner remove the drain plug and drain out the engine oil. The engine oil temperature may be high enough to burn your fingers when the drain plug is loosened. Wait until the drain plug is cool enough to touch with your bare hands. If possible, wear moisture proof gloves. Recycle or properly dispose of used oil as a good citizen.

What is the correct way of checking Engine Oil in my car?

It is important to keep the engine oil at the correct level, to ensure proper lubrication of your vehicle's engine. Check the oil level with the vehicle on a level surface. The oil level indication may be inaccurate if the vehicle is on a slope. The oil level should be checked either before starting the engine, or at least two or three minutes after stopping the engine. Pull out the oil dipstick, wipe off oil with a clean cloth, insert the dipstick all the way into the engine, and then remove it again. The oil on the stick should be between the upper and lower limits shown on the stick. If the oil level indication is near the lower limit add enough oil to rise to the upper limit.

Why a car needs an Engine Oil?

It is impossible to run any engine without a lubricant. Engine oil does many jobs as given under and is the secret behind the longevity of your car engine.
The following are the functions of a car engine oil:

  1. Lubricate and prevent wear and tear
  2. Reduce friction
  3. Achieve a quick start
  4. Protect against rust and corrosion
  5. Keep engine interiors clean
  6. Cool engine parts
  7. Seal combustion products
  8. Be non - foaming
  9. Ensure fuel economy

4-Stroke Motor Cycles

How is lubrication different in a 4-stroke 2-wheeler as compared to a car?

A car employs a dry clutch that doesn’t need an oil. Engine and Gearbox are lubricated with dedicated Engine Oil and Gear Oil respectively. However, in a 4-Stroke 2-Wheeler (also called 4T Motor Cycle) you have a wet-clutch, Engine and Transmission all lubricated by a common oil. Moreover, the 4T bikes operate at a far more engine rpm and power density than the cars and are generally air-cooled unlike car engines which are water-cooled. In other word, the 4T MCO is exposed to higher temperature and much more operational severity than a Car Engine Oil.

What is the Oil Drain Interval for my 4-stroke motorcycle oil?

Yes, you need a 4T Motor Cycle Oil. Such Oil will have JASO Clutch Friction Credentials like JASO T 903 MA, MA1 or MA2 to work satisfactorily with the wet-clutch. An oil having API SJ/SL with JASO T 903 MA/MA2 would be the best bet for your Motor Cycle.

What is the Oil Drain Interval for my 4-stroke motorcycle oil?

Please refer to the recommendations made by the manufacturer of the motorcycle. In general, the Oil Drain Intervals of the 4T motorcycle Oil are in the tune of 6,000 – 8,000 km.

Radiator Coolant

Why a car needs a coolant?

When you Fuel is burnt inside the run your car engine, it produces a lot of heat. Only a part of it gets converted into power. Out of the rest of the heat, some part rejected out of the engine through the hot exhaust gases, while the balance keeps heating the engine parts. We need a radiator to keep the engine cool and continue performing.
Apart from cooling the engine, a coolant performs the following functions:

  1. Capable of providing Anti freezing properties and boiling protection
  2. Protection of metals against corrosion

What is the correct way of changing the coolant in a car?

When the engine is warm (NOT HOT) open the radiator drain plug or remove bottom hose.

  1. Ensure your car is parked on level ground with the hand brake applied
  2. Set heater control to 'hot'
  3. Replace drain plug / radiator hose
  4. Remove radiator cap. Use a water pressure hose to flush out old coolant
  5. Put recommended quantity of HP Koolgard into radiator. Top up with water and replace cap
  6. Run engine for 5 minutes. Check water level and top up if necessary
Complete flushing and renewal of your engine coolant should occur at least every two years. Once every year engine coolant changes are desirable, if concentration is not well maintained. Most car engines have a coolant system which requires a glycol based coolant mixed with water. The glycol base acts as an anti - freeze and maintains the physical characteristics of coolant, which continuously protects your engine parts from corrosion and damage. The concentration of HP Koolgard in water should be minimum 30%, or as per vehicle manufacturer's recommendation, so as to attain complete protection.
Please check: Keep a close watch on radiator hose and fittings. A damaged radiator hose or a loose fitting may result in leakage and overheating. Check the pressure of the radiator cap. Keep observing the change in colour of water being drained from the radiator; it can give you an indication of your engine's health.

General

What is engine oil made from?

Engine oils are made up from three important ingredients – base oils, viscosity modifiers and performance additives. These are carefully selected and skilfully blended to enable the oil to provide maximum engine protection.

Will I really notice the difference if I don’t make frequent oil changes?

Not changing your oil on a regular basis can significantly reduce the level of protection provided against engine wear. Engine oil acts as a reservoir for all kinds of by-products that form when the fuel burns, including soot, sludge, water and acidic material, as well as unburned and partially burned fuel. At the same time, the stress placed on the oil during engine operation gradually depletes the components that determine the oil’s performance. Refreshing the oil on a regular basis ensures that the right balance of components is present in the oil. It also removes waste materials that might otherwise result in increased deposit formation, corrosion of metal components and increased wear.
